Classical Pilates Instruction Coming to Melrose on 7th Avenue Pilates by Fitness Solutions to Relocate to the Melrose District

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 30, 2007

Pilates by Fitness Solutions, Arizona’s only Power Pilates-affiliated studio will re-open its doors in Central Phoenix’s trendy Melrose on 7th Avenue district on August 13.

“We have grown organically through word of mouth over the last ten years,” said studio owner Lauren Tomasulo. “We are looking forward to continuing to grow in the new studio in our new neighborhood. Melrose on 7th is a vibrant community and we are excited to be part of its renewal.”

The new, 2700 square-foot studio is located at 4113 North 7th Avenue on the northeast corner of 7th Avenue and Indian School Road. The revitalized neighborhood is home to restaurants, shops, and art galleries and has an active day and nightlife. The studio is within walking distance from a shuttle stop on the First Fridays Artwalk route, and Tomasulo has plans to leverage her fortunate new address.

“We will be hosting our open house beginning on Friday, September 7th during First Friday and continuing though the weekend,” said Tomasulo. “We will be having a sort of ‘Taste of Pilates’ during which people can come in and take free, abbreviated mat classes, see demonstrations, and learn what all of the weird-looking equipment is all about.”

The equipment to which Tomasulo refers is an integral part of the classical Pilates method which she teaches. Pilates was developed by German-born boxer and performer, Joseph Pilates, to rehabilitate his fellow prisoners while he was detained in a British internment camp during World War I. There, he developed exercises that stretch, strengthen, and balance the body beginning with the muscles in the body’s core – the abdominals, upper thighs, and back – and radiating out to the limbs.

Deep, focused breathing helps practitioners increase their lung capacity and improve their blood flow; it contributes to the relaxed sense of well-being that follows a Pilates workout. After the war Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara immigrated to New York, where the techniques and equipment were further refined. Classical Pilates has been continuously practiced in the United States since 1926.

Pilates by Fitness Solutions is a Participating Training Center in the New York-based Power Pilates network of certified studios. Power Pilates’ founders learned the technique from the first generation of Joseph Pilates’ students. Currently, it is the only studio in Arizona that is endorsed by Power Pilates to train instructors in the classical Pilates method.

Pilates’ visibility has increased over the past two decades as celebrities and athletes have embraced the workout. As a result, variations on the techniques have evolved as have less expensive, less rigorous certification programs. Tomasulo advises those interested in pursuing Pilates to ask prospective instructors tough questions about their qualifications to teach the method.

“The comprehensive classical certification process is intense and demands a significant investment in terms of time and finances,” she says. “It requires certified instructors to maintain their certifications through continuing education beyond the hundreds of hours that they devote toward the initial certification. That rigor ensures that clients are less likely to be injured or to worsen a chronic condition during their workouts.”

YogaSoul Center Offers a Free Week of Classes to New Pilates Students – Creating the Gift of Fitness and Community During the Holiday Season

Eagan, Minnesota (PRWEB) December 15, 2011

Release holiday stress and create whole-body fitness with Pilates classes at YogaSoul Center in Eagan. All new students receive 1 week of unlimited classes!

The full-scale studio offers a full range of Pilates classes that strengthen without adding bulk, increase flexibility, develop core strength, improve posture, increase energy, as well as promote weight loss. Pilates can also create a long, lean appearance.

Pilates creates body awareness that can change the daily lives of people of all ages, ranging from the average person to athletes, as well as those with physical injuries and in need of rehabilitation.

YogaSoul Pilates instructor Shannon McGarrigle can attest to Pilates power.

I have gained abdominal control and strength, and have defined arms and legs that are stronger than the ones I had during high school when I was in tennis, track, and cross country skiing, said McGarrigle, who has been teaching at YogaSoul since spring of 2009. Pilates is a way to invest in your body. The concentration and focus used leads to increasing your own knowledge of your posture, as well as your learned bad habits. The Pilates method creates a stronger center to rely on, and teaches you how to be more effective in your movements, whether it be running on a treadmill, skiing or even carrying groceries.

She said Pilates at YogaSoul is special because it creates a community environment where people can practice without a sense of ego or competition.

Mat classes, equipment and private sessions are available. Mat classes give an overall body workout and teach the fundamental floor exercises and principals of breathing, concentration and coordination. Reformer, Chair and Cadillac Pilates equipment were invented by Joseph Pilates to bring the mat principals to a whole new level. With the equipment, resistance is built into the exercises and utilizes hundreds of exercise variations. It can also be modified to suit the needs of any fitness level, as well as people rehabilitating from injury.

YogaSoul Centers mission is to help clients win the battle against stress. It has an extensive class offering in several styles of yoga, including Kundalini, Hatha, Yin, and Vinyasa. It boasts a fully equipped Pilates studio and offers many kinds of classes, including Zumba, Tai Chi and belly dancing. Its full roster of teachers and healers provide clients with a variety of healing services, including intuitive readings, Reiki, Thai yoga bodywork, Ayurveda, energy work and several others. YogaSoul also hosts special workshops and Kundalini yoga teacher trainings.

Pilates by Fitness Solutions Offers a ‘Taste of Pilates’: Melrose District Studio to Host Weekend-Long Open House

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) August 26, 2007

Pilates by Fitness Solutions, Arizona’s only Power Pilates-affiliated studio, announced that it will host a three-day open house to celebrate its arrival in central Phoenix’s trendy Melrose neighborhood. The open house will run from September 6 – September 8 at the studio located at 4113 North 7th Avenue on the Northeast corner of 7th Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix.

The open house will kick off at 5:00 p.m. on September 6 with an informal reception for members of the Seventh Avenue Merchants Association (SAMA), their employees and customers. “We want our neighbors to know what we do here, and we want our clients to know who our new neighbors are,” said Lauren Tomasulo, the studio’s owner.

Just before moving into the new space, Tomasulo joined SAMA, which has been a driving force in revitalizing the mile-long commercial stretch of North 7th Avenue between Indian School and Camelback Roads. The organization has successfully worked with the city and ASU to fund community re-development and crime prevention projects.

The re-development efforts include permanent art installations along shaded, pedestrian-friendly, walkways which have helped to make the neighborhood a Midtown destination.

The timing of the open house is not accidental. Pilates by Fitness Solutions is located along Artlink’s First Fridays Art Walk route, and is a short walk from a stop on the monthly art event’s shuttle route.

On Friday, September 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the public is invited to “sample” Pilates at the studio. Tomasulo and her instructors will lead Pilates demonstrations and abbreviated classes at no charge.

“The studio will be open on Friday and Saturday to anyone who is interested in learning about Pilates and how it can increase their strength and flexibility, as well as improve their balance. Strength, flexibility and balance are important factors in overall fitness,

and the benefits extend to your everyday life and activities,” said Tomasulo.

Pilates, which was developed by Joseph Pilates while he was interned in a British prison camp during World War I, has gained currency in the past few years as it has been embraced by celebrities, athletes and ordinary people seeking to improve their fitness.

Is Your Pilates Instructor Experienced? Pilates by Fitness Solutions to Conduct 18-Hour Power Pilates Mat Certification

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) September 26, 2007

Pilates by Fitness Solutions will host an 18-hour Power Pilates-approved mat certification class from September 28-30 at its central Phoenix studio. Power Pilates is the New York-based standard bearer for classical Pilates education and Pilates by Fitness Solutions is the only Power Pilates Participating Training Center in Arizona.

“There are not enough qualified Pilates instructors to meet the demand from people who want to learn the method,” says Lauren Tomasulo, the owner of Pilates by Fitness Solutions. According to the Pilates Method Alliance, a non-profit organization of Pilates instructors that promotes a classical approach to the discipline, Ms. Tomasulo is right.

In 2005, the organization found that some 9 million Americans had taken a Pilates class and that more than 60% of gyms and fitness centers offered Pilates instruction. However, the group estimated that only about a quarter of Pilates instructors were adequately trained to instruct their clients safely.

As the method has gained popularity, modified versions of the classical approach have emerged, including Pilates performed in pools and on burlesque poles. Pilates classes that promise to improve sports performance have also become popular. According to Ms. Tomasulo, these trends point to the need for instructors who are very well-versed in the classical approach to Pilates.

“Pilates is a system of stretching and strengthening that engages the core, the neck, and the spine,” said Ms. Tomasulo. “Pilates can be beneficial in strengthening those areas, and, for some people, even therapeutic; but those are areas of the body that are particularly vulnerable to debilitating injury. You want to ask a prospective teacher about their experience and education.”

The 18-hour mat certification class will be taught by Alicia Zabrocki of Power Pilates. During the certification course, fledgling instructors will learn how to conduct a one-hour mat class which is performed on the floor without the method’s signature apparatus. Besides the class, students must pass a written exam to become certified, and they are expected to have a working knowledge of basic exercise physiology.

Mat certification is the first step in completing the 600 hours of training and education that Power Pilates requires instructors to have to become fully certified to teach classical Pilates. Tomasulo is herself fully certified by Power Pilates, and maintains that certification through continuing education.

Besides training aspiring instructors, Pilates by Fitness Solutions will host continuing education classes for Power Pilates certified instructors in November 2007.

5 Popular Fitness Activities That Can Surprisingly Do More Harm To Your Back than Good

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) February 27, 2012

There are always inherent dangers when starting new physical activities, and Belltown Spine & Wellness Center, featuring Seattle chiropractic services, urges learning proper techniques to avoid serious back injuries. As fitness trends become more popular, many people decide to incorporate different activities into their routine, experimenting with fun new ways to get and stay in shape.

It is important for anyone beginning new activities, even if they are not new to fitness, to realize there is always a learning curve. Starting out in moderation and seeking quality instruction are keys to reaping the benefits from these five popular fitness activities without ending up at the chiropractor.

1. Running

For the fitness novice, running is a natural place to start. You can go at your own pace and need very little to begin, aside from a good pair of running shoes. Shoes are not always easy to find and are best selected when taking the individuals style into account. As a beginner, you can be sure this will change as your technique improves. With improper technique back problems can arise. There are many books and online resources to help you hone your stride, so moderation at the beginning is vital.

2. Yoga

Originating in India, Yoga can improve your physical, mental and spiritual discipline and flexibility. Holding poses and controlling breathing are common activities, which require the aid of a qualified, attentive instructor to do safely. Remaining mindful of body positioning is crucial to avoiding serious back and neck injuries. Good instructors will make moderation mandatory within a thoroughly non-competitive environment.

3. Pilates

Developed by Joseph Pilates nearly a hundred years ago, Pilates remains a popular body conditioning routine that builds flexibility, strength and endurance. Strengthening the core through controlled movements, this popular fitness system is easy to adjust for beginners to experts. Still, without proper technique, focusing on careful body positioning, back problems can and will occur

4. Kettlebell

This Russian invention features a cast iron weight that resembles a cannon ball with a handle on it. By lifting and swinging in several different ways, the Kettlebell exercises incorporate the added dimension of large numbers of repetitions. This makes it a more aerobic activity than weight training, but also adds an extra element of concern for back and shoulder injuries. Proper form is very important and can be learned with the help of gym trainers or by numerous online resources and videos.

5. CrossFit

A very popular advanced strength and conditioning routine using diverse and high intensity movements, Crossfit is definitely not for the fitness novice. Its a good idea to attend an affiliated gym that will lead you through a workout. Extreme focus must be maintained throughout the ten to twenty minute routine to ensure proper body positioning, especially as fatigue sets in. Even though it is designed not to be repetitive, start by not maxing out in your first session to help avoid serious back problems.

About:

Belltown Spine & Wellness uses the latest technology in spinal rehabilitation equipment. Dr. Mindel understands that all patient and conditions are unique and we do not use a cookie cutter program. A complete and specialized spinal back program will be designed specific to your needs.
