Psychiatrists (as opposed to psychologists) are medical doctors. So you’d need 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and then a residence in psychiatry. The work you do depends on your specialty. Some have private practices. Some work for hospitals, seeing patients and running therapy programs. I know one who works as an “expert witness”. He interviews people for the courts
and testifies as to their competence. He didn’t start out with that job though because it requires a lot of experience.
